NEW YORK - After being shutout in its last two games, the Yale men's soccer team needed someone to step up Saturday against Columbia. Brad Rose, the Bulldogs leading scorer, was a logical candidate, and he delivered, scoring twice as Yale edged the Lions 2-1 on a mild night at the Columbia Soccer Stadium.

James Prince scored for Columbia at 20:25, but Rose answered with a pair of goals in a 3 minute, 22 second stretch late in the first half. The first came when he headed in a Jon Carlos cross at 31:55 and the second was on a hard shot from 15 yards out at 35:17.

"Brad was very sharp finishing his two chances," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins.

Rose now leads the Bulldogs with six goals and 16 points.

Goalkeeper Travis Chulick made sure Rose's two goals were enough. He made a diving save to rob Bayo Adafin late in the first half and then denied Adafin again midway through the second half.

"Columbia came at us hard in the second half but we withstood their pressure well," Tompkins said. "Travis made a couple of outstanding saves to seal the victory."

The Lions (4-9-1, 2-3 Ivy) outshot Yale 12-4 in the final 45 minutes.

Chulick finished with seven saves, including six in the second half. Alexander Aurrichio stopped two shots for Columbia.

"We're pleased to get a win on the road," Tompkins said. "Hopefully we can build on it in our final two games."

The Bulldogs (5-7-3, 2-3 Ivy) play their final home game next Saturday against Brown. Kickoff at Reese Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. Yale then closes out the season at Princeton on Nov. 13.
