Athletic Medicine

Mission Statement

Empowering Student-Athletes Through Comprehensive Care - Yale Athletic Medicine strives to optimize athletic performance, reduce injuries, and enhance recovery by providing innovative, patient-centered, and holistic medical care to Yale’s Varsity Student-Athletes.

We are dedicated to fostering a culture of excellence in athletic medicine, integrating innovative treatments, evidence-based practices, and collaborative teamwork to ensure student-athletes reach their highest potential while prioritizing their health and well-being and enhancing their overall student-athlete experience.

The Athletic Medicine Team

Our dedicated team includes orthopaedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, certified athletic trainers (ATCs), physician assistants (PAs), strength and conditioning professionals, physical therapists, mental health clinicians and a nurse coordinator.  We also consult with the specialty experts of the Yale School of Medicine. This multidisciplinary team approach assists with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries and illness for Yale’s 35 varsity programs.

Our Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize health and performance of our student-athletes.  Athletic trainers specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, intervention, and rehabilitation of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions common in sport.

Yale Athletic Medicine recognizes the importance of maintaining and improving the care we provide to our student-athletes.  To this end, we are committed to the continued professional growth for our team, supporting ongoing clinical education, as well as the application of innovative techniques in sports medicine research and technology.

The Yale Athletic Medicine Department also works with the Athletic Training Education Programs at Quinnipiac University, Southern Connecticut State University, Sacred Heart University, Merrimack College and UConn, serving as a clinical site for their athletic training students.

Yale Athletic Medicine will comply with the recommendations and guidelines as established by the NCAA sports medicine committee, the Ivy League, and the National Athletic Trainers' Association.

Yale Athletics Secondary Insurance Coverage for Student-Athletes

Yale Athletics provides secondary insurance to help cover varsity student athletes’ officially sanctioned athletics-related injuries. An Athletics-Related Injury is defined as one that occurs during countable activities as outlined by Ivy League and NCAA rules or during supervised athletic activities led by the Department of Athletics. This secondary insurance policy covers costs associated with injuries sustained during intercollegiate athletic participation, only after the student athlete’s primary insurance has paid. For more detail, please reference the Yale Secondary Insurance Coverage Policies and Procedures for Varsity Student Athletes document.
