NEW HAVEN, Conn. - It was an efficient night for the Yale women's soccer team Thursday against Sacred Heart. The Bulldogs had a season-low 14 shots, but they certainly made the most of them. Yale scored seven times and cruised to an easy 7-0 victory over the Pioneers on a cool late summer night at Reese Stadium. Becky Brown led the onslaught with three goals, while Leslie Perez, Lauren Mathy, Anne Song and Natalie Romine each added one.

The Bulldogs scored on two of their first three shots and five of their first seven.

"We scored on 50 percent of our shots. That's pretty good. Usually it's around 15 percent," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We've really made that one of our priorities. We have three goalies so we are able to do a lot of shooting in practice."

Yale is 3-0 and off to its best start since the 2004 team won its first five games. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 12-0.

"Our offense is really starting to click," Meredith said. "We're building confidence."

Ayana Sumiyasu and Adelaide Gay (2 saves) combined to post the shutout in goal. The Bulldogs outshot Sacred Heart 14-5 and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Twenty-two players saw action for Yale and 11 players had at least one point. The goals for Mathy and Song, both freshmen, were the first of their careers.  Fellow freshman Kristen Forster added a career-high three assists.

"We were able to give a lot of people a chance to play," Meredith said. "All the kids have been working hard in practice, and the competition has been very good."

Perez got the Bulldogs on the board in the ninth minute when she banged in a Brown cross. Brown then scored the next three goals before the intermission. She now has six goals in three games.

Mathy scored off a corner kick early in the second half, and Song made it 6-0 when she settled a Kate Macauley pass and knocked it in from right in front. Romine capped the scoring with less than five minutes left.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they host Northwestern. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
