Kubiuk Scores For Yale
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Yale women's soccer team had
the kind of start it thought it needed in Saturday's Ivy
League showdown with Harvard. The Bulldogs got five shots in the
first 12 minutes but couldn't capitalize. The Crimson then
scored in the 14th minute, added an insurance goal on a
penalty kick in the second half and held on for a 2-1 victory at
Ohiri Field. Mary Kubiuk scored for Yale.
"It was a frustrating day," said Yale head coach
Rudy Meredith. "I thought we played well enough to win. We
had a number of chances early in the game. It easily could have
been 3-0."
Corner kicks have been an issue for the Yale defense throughout
the season, and Harvard took advantage of one to grab the early
lead. Peyton Johnson played the ball from the corner and toward the
front of the cage. Elizabeth Weisman headed the ball to her
left, finding Katherine Sheeleigh who batted home the ball for her
fifth goal of the season at 13:52.
It stayed 1-0 until early in the second half when Alexandra
Conigliaro was taken down in the box. Conigliaro took the penalty
kick and converted to give the Crimson a two-goal lead.
Kubiuk got Yale on the board late in the second half. Her
initial shot was saved, but she banged in the rebound to tally her
first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs (3-6-1, 0-2 Ivy) had a chance to tie with under a
minute left. Enma Mullo sent a corner kick into
the box. Anna McCahon got off a shot, but it was
blocked, and the Crimson cleared away the rebound.
Yale finished with a 22-18 edge in shots. Both teams had four
corner kicks.
Ayana Sumiyasu made six saves in goal for the
Bulldogs. Jessica Wright stopped seven shots for Harvard (4-4-1,
1-1-0 Ivy).
Yale is back in action on Tuesday at Saint Peter's.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
