Box Score Riach Scores In Second Straight Game For Bulldogs
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Yale's first-half performance Saturday against Columbia didn't sit well with head coach Kylie Stannard. The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 and had been outshot 6-1 when they headed to the locker room. Stannard made it clear he expected more.
The players responded. Yale carried the play for much of the second half, and tied the score midway through. Columbia, though, escaped with a 2-1 win thanks to a goal in the 75th minute.
"This game was completely two opposite halves and performances," said Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We couldn't do anything right in the first half and our heads were not right. I challenged the team at half and to their credit, they responded very positively."
The Bulldogs were rewarded at 71:46 when Cameron Riach headed in Nicky Downs' corner kick.
Just 3:07 later, though, Columbia tallied the game winner. Arthur Bosua had the honors when he finished an Amit Shumowitz cross.
"After getting the much deserved equalizer, we again failed to refocus and allowed another goal in a `big 5' moment," Stannard said. "Individual defending wasn't good enough. We responded well and pressured Columbia relentlessly until the end, but we dug our own grave again and couldn't get out."
Yale had six shots over the final 15 minutes but couldn't get one past Columbia goalkeeper Kyle Jackson, who finished with four saves.
The Lions (9-4-1, 3-2 Ivy) won for the third time in their last four games. Columbia was nationally ranked early in the season after opening with four straight victories.
The Bulldogs, whose last four losses have each come by one goal, have three games remaining, starting Tuesday at Central Connecticut and followed by Ivy contests against Brown and Princeton.
"These guys have three games left to show me what they're about and what kind of legacy they want to leave as the 108th team in the history of this program," Stannard said. "I am challenging them to be better and reach higher."
