No. 6 Bulldogs Show Grit in Win Over No. 5 Cardinal

PALO ALTO, Cali. -- The Yale women's squash team earned a hard fought 5-4 win over the Stanford Cardinal earlier today.  In a tight match between two top-ten teams, the Bulldogs were able to finish strong to overtake the higher ranked Cardinal, who have never won against Yale.

With the match score at 3-4 in favor of the Cardinal (3-3), senior Jenny Scherl had little room for error in her match against Stanford freshman Casey Wong in the 1 spot. Down in the match two games to one, Scherl was losing 8-3 in game four before rolling eight consecutive points to push the match to a fifth game. She then hung on to win the fifth game 12-10 in order to keep the Bulldogs' chances of winning the overall matchup alive.

Senior Captain Shiyuan Mao then won the last match 3-1 to seal the win for Yale. "Today was a great showing of our team's ability to fight from behind in order to beat a highly ranked Stanford squad," said Mao. "This match was great practice for the girls to know how to compete when the competition is close."

Yale is now 8-1 on the season and will get six days rest before traveling to Philadelphia on Friday to play the No. 14 Drexel Dragons.
