Second Half Goal Lifts UMass Over Yale

Box Score

Bulldogs Fall 1-0 In Amherst

Visits to Amherst, Massachusetts have not been kind to the Yale women's soccer team over the years. The Bulldogs turned in one of their better performances there on Sunday but still left disappointed after dropping a 1-0 decision to UMass on a warm and humid late summer afternoon.

Yale had a 17-13 edge in shots but was stymied by Minutewomen goalkeeper Cassidy Babin, who made eight saves to post the shutout.

The only goal came in the 70th minute when Jenny Hipp fired a hard shot that Jane Buckley saved. Kelly Marra, though, found the rebound and knocked it home at 69:13.

The Bulldogs had some opportunities in the final minutes but couldn't capitalize. Noelle Higginson had a shot stopped by Babin and Lydia Shaw had a shot blocked in the final 10 minutes.

Yale also was whistled for three off sides following UMass's goal.

The Minutewomen are 3-1-1 in their last five games.

Bulldog head coach Rudy Meredith scheduled the game so his team would have an opportunity to play on a grass field before next Saturday's Ivy League opener vs. Princeton, which also will be played on grass.

The Bulldogs will take an impressive 6-2-1 record into the Ivy opener with the Tigers.

Yale and Princeton kickoff next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Roberts Stadium.
