NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A big Saturday night crowd at Reese Stadium was treated to a terrific 90 minutes of college soccer between Yale and Harvard. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, one moment was enough to lift the Crimson to victory.
Gabby DelPico scored the only goal of the game at 65:54 when she took a nifty feed from Murphy Agnew and found the back of the net from the top of the box.
Otherwise, it was an even battle between two teams that came into the night with identical 7-2 overall and 1-0 Ivy League records.
"Kudos to Harvard. They played an excellent match, and on a night where not much separated the two teams, they were able to score the one goal," said
Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "There are a lot of positives to take away from this game, and I'm happy with how our team played for long stretches, but most of all how we competed for 90 minutes. Harvard was able to do some things against us tonight that I believe we can learn from, and hopefully improve upon over the next few days and weeks."
Goalkeeper
Alyssa Fagel was strong for the Bulldogs. She finished with eight saves.
Harvard's Kat Hess also played well. She stopped five shots. The biggest came when she denied
Aerial Chavarin's breakaway with 13:30 left in the second half.
The Crimson outshot the Bulldogs 15-11 and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss snapped Yale's five-game-winning streak.
The Bulldogs take a break from Ivy play to host Albany on Tuesday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
"This loss hurts, but tomorrow when we wake up, we turn our attention to a very good Albany team," Faherty said.
