PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In an offensive shootout on a cold Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium, the Yale Bulldogs pulled away late as senior quarterback Kurt Rawlings tossed five touchdown passes, and a Yale record four touchdowns to senior captain JP Shohfi, in the Elis win, 59-35.
Â
Yale scored its most points in 16 years, a 62-29 victory over Towson in 2003, and totaled 627 yards of total offense, the first time the Bulldogs hit 600 total yards since 2014. The Yale defense also forced four turnovers on the afternoon.
Â
The Bulldogs scored the first 17 points of the game, but Brown rallied as the Bears trailed 24-21 at the half and took the lead, 28-27, four minutes into the second half. Yale dominated from that point on however, outscoring Brown 32-7.
Â
"We played a below standard first half, but we refocused at halftime and our guys responded just like I knew they would," said head coach Tony Reno. "This team is different in the sense that know what a response is and how to do it. There are a lot of teams that search for it, but this team knows how to do it."
Â
Rawlings, who has won the past three Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week awards and four of the past five, kept his offensive momentum rolling with a career-high five touchdown passes and 360 yards through the air on 15 completions. He also added 21 yards on the ground and was only sacked once. With 2,244 passing yards, Rawlings ranks seventh on Yale single-season performance list. His 2,469 yards of total offense ranks sixth-most and his 17 touchdown passes tie for seventh.
Â
Shohfi had Rawlings' eye all afternoon as he pulled down 10 balls and went over 160 yards receiving for the third-straight game along with the most TD catches in a game every by a Yale player. He finished the contest with 166 yards receiving and had touchdown grabs of 23, 15, 11 and nine yards. Shohfi's seven touchdown receptions this season are tied for ninth-most in a single season at Yale. He is now up to 17 career touchdown grabs which is ted for fourth-most in Yale history.
Â
On the ground, Zane Dudek went for 216 yards, one shy of his career high to go along with 78 yards receiving and a touchdown. The performance ranks 11th-best in a single game at Yale. It was also the first time since last season's opener in which a Yale runner topped 200 yards, which was done by Dudek. Additionally, Dudek crossed the 2,000-yard rushing mark in his career, becoming just the 12th Bulldog to do so. He now ranks eighth all-time at Yale with 2,147 rushing yards.
Â
On defense, senior defensive tackle Spencer Matthaei led the charge with two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. It was one of three forced fumbles in the game by the Bulldogs. Both senior Micah Awodiran freshman Brandon Benn were in on 10 tackles while Awodiran had 1.5 sacks and Benn had a forced fumble. The Yale defense more than doubled its season high in sacks which it set last week with 8.5 on the day. Their 10 tackles for loss also tied a season-best mark.
Â
Senior linebacker Ryan Burke posted four solo stops, a sack and a forced fumble. Burke, sophomore Kyle Ellis and junior Melvin Rouse II all had fumble recoveries. Sophomore Dathan Hickey helped ice the game with the game's lone interception with seconds left in the fourth quarter.
