The Yale women's soccer team pushed No. 23 Virginia Tech into a very unfamiliar position on Sunday in Blacksburg, Va.
Aerial Chavarin's goal midway through the first half gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. It was the first time the Hokies trailed all season.
Â
Virginia Tech, though, showed why it is one of the top programs in the ACC, scoring twice in the second half to earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Thompson Field.
Â
"Today was a game of two halves, but credit to Virginia Tech for stepping their game up in the second half," said
Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We did a lot of things well in the opening 45 minutes – we controlled a good amount of the play and were dangerous in the attacking zone. There are a lot of positives to take from this game, but at the same time quite a bit of room for us to continue to grow."
Â
The Bulldogs (2-2) jumped in front at 31:37 when Chavarin headed home an
Emily Yin cross off a corner kick. It was Chavarin's fourth goal of the season.
Â
It stayed that way until midway through the second half. Nicole Kozlova, one of Virginia's Tech's top scorers, tallied her third goal of the season at 64:01.
Â
Kozlova then scored the game winner with 7:08 left in regulation.
Â
Goalkeeper
Alyssa Fagel finished with five saves for the Bulldogs.
Â
The Hokies, who improved to 6-0, had a 16-3 edge in shots.
Â
Yale returns home to host Fordham on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Â
"We look forward to returning to Reese against another good side," Faherty said. "Prior to that, we will get in a couple of training session in hopes that we can work towards a better result in the next game."
