Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Min. –
Claire Dalton scored twice and had a hand on each of her team's goals as the Yale Women's Hockey Team gave No. 2 Minnesota a battle before falling to the Gophers 6-3 in front of a big crowd at Ridder Arena.
The Bulldogs (7-7-0) outshot UM 4-3 in a scoreless first period, but senior goalie
Tera Hofmann (21 saves) could only hold off the high-scoring Gophers for so long. UM (16-1-3) hit the net four times in the second, while Dalton kept the visitors in the contest with a tally at 8:01.
First-year forward
Elle Hartje, who used a pass from Dalton, cut the margin to 5-2 early in the third with her sixth tally. These two skaters helped the Elis score three times on just 17 shots on goal, compared to 27 on target and six different scorers for the Gophers.
"We had a great a first period and played with some desire and confidence," said
Mark Bolding, Yale's Susan Cavanagh Head Coach. "Minnesota pushed back in the second and the game started to open up a bit too much for our liking. Winning the third period was what we wanted, so that's a nice feeling heading into tomorrow's game. Mistakes were made, but I'm happy to see this team continue to push forward against top teams."
Dalton, a sophomore forward from Toronto, Ont., notched her fifth goal of the season in the game's final minute to tie her career-high with three points in a contest.
Yale and Minnesota skate again Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
