It was a formula that was almost guaranteed to lead to success for the Yale men's soccer team. Score the first two goals of the game and let the top-ranked defense in the Ivy League take it from there. There was one small hiccup along the way, but not significant enough to spoil the night.
Eric Lagos, Kahveh Zahiroleslam and
Daniel Massaad supplied the offense as the Bulldogs earned a crucial 3-1 victory over Columbia in New York City.
Â
The only blemish – Yale actually yielded a goal, the first it has allowed in an Ivy game. Other than that, it was another near flawless performance for the Bulldogs, who improved to-3-0-2 in league play and are unbeaten in their last seven games overall.
"Every game in this league is a battle when each point matters so much," said
Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "I liked our mentality for the most part in the first half except after we went up two goals. I felt like we lost focus for a bit and the margins are too small to allow any lapses. We allowed Columbia to get re-energized going into halftime. I liked how we responded in the second half and started to control the ball in our own half more consistently. When we can do this, we are going to keep pressure on the opponent and create more chances."
Lagos gave Yale the early lead when he got position on a Columbia defender and knocked home a pretty
Paolo Carroll cross at 9:04.
Â
Zahiroleslam's fourth goal of the season put the Bulldogs in front by two at 33:57. It came on a corner kick, and
Jeremy Haddock was credited with an assist.
Â
The Lions got on the board at 39:21 on a Sebastian Gunbeyi goal, but Yale's defense shut down the Columbia offense the rest of the way.
Â
Massaad capped the scoring when he knocked home a
Gelber Lemus corner kick midway through the second half.
Â
Yale outshot the Lions 17-7 and had a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.
"It was great to get a few goals tonight and hopefully we can build on this performance next weekend," Stannard said.
Â
The Bulldogs are back at Reese Stadium next Saturday, hosting Brown at 4 p.m.
