YALE GAME NOTES
Â
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 7 Yale Women's Ice Hockey Team has split its two meetings with Princeton this year, but the third meeting will be much more significant than bragging rights. The Bulldogs and Tigers square off in an ECAC Hockey Semifinal at Ingalls Rink in the opening contest of the first championship weekend hosted by Yale. The Friday 3 p.m. game airs live on ESPN+ and internationally on stretch internet.
Â
LAST MEETINGS
They played the first and last weekends of the regular season. The Tigers took a 2-0 game on Oct. 29 at the Whale before the Elis returned the favor in a 3-0 game at Baker Rink on Feb. 19. Â First-year Yale goalie
Pia Dukaric made a combined 50 saves with both starts in net.
Â
ECAC HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
Yale is the No. 2 seed while Princeton is No. 8. In Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal, Colgate (3) takes on No. 4 Quinnipiac for the right to play for the ECAC title on Saturday at 3 p.m. All games air live on ESPN+. The conference champion earns an automatic spot in the 11-team NCAA Tournament field that is announced Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPN News.
Â
BULLDOGS
Yale (24-7-1) earned many accolades from the conference coaches over the last two weeks. That did not distract the Bulldogs from taking last weekend's playoff series with St. Lawrence. The Elis responded to a 4-2 loss in the first game with 4-2 and 3-2 wins to advance to their second-ever semifinal.
Emma Seitz led the way with four goals and five points while
Elle Hartje and
Anna Bargman each chipped in a goal and three helpers.
Gianna Meloni was in net for the two Yale wins and had a combined 34 saves. The Elis, who are No. 7 in the Pairwise and both national polls, rank fifth nationally in scoring defense (1.53) and sixth in offense (3.62) with a mix of individuals among Division I's best. They also have the ECAC Defenseman of the Year, two All-ECAC First Team picks, an ECAC All-Rookie Team selection and two others who were finalists for major conference awards this winter.
Â
TIGERS
Princeton (13-14-5) became the first No. 8 seed in women's ECAC Hockey history to knock off a top seed. The Tigers won their three-game series at Harvard last weekend to get to New Haven. Princeton won 4-2, fell 2-1 and then edged the Crimson 3-2 in the finale. Princeton, the 2020 ECAC Tournament Champions, got a great performance from goalie Rachel McQuigge, who stopped 103 of 109 shots last weekend.
