NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale softball team saw its bats come alive in a big way in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Central Connecticut. Yale banged out 11 hits and scored six runs. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Blue Devils had a strong game at the plate as well. CCSU scored four runs in the eighth inning to post a 10-6 victory. Central Connecticut won the first game, 6-1.
Maddie Latta homered and
Nicole Conway struck out nine in the circle for Yale in the opener.
The Blue Devils broke open a close game by scoring four runs in the fifth inning.
Latta's home run came leading off the sixth and was deep blast over the left-field fence.
Carmen Muscolina followed with a triple, and it looked like the Bulldogs might be poised for a big comeback. Central pitcher Kari Marks, though, avoided further damage.
Yale loaded the bases in the seventh, but Kaylee Whitaker came on in relief and got the final two outs.
Carolyn Skotz went 2-for-5 with three RBI in the second game. Latta and
Sam Goodcase also had two hits.
Goodcase's RBI single in the first gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Skotz's two-run single increased the lead to 4-1, and RBIs from
Miranda Papes and
Sophie Woodridge had Yale in front 6-3 after three innings.
The Blue Devils, though, scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to tie.
Yale had a great opportunity to win in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Whittaker, who again came on in relief, worked out of the jam.
CCSU then scored four times in the eighth to earn the victory.
The Bulldogs return to Ivy League play this weekend with a three-game series at Dartmouth. The two teams meet in a doubleheader on Saturday and play a single game on Sunday. The action begins at 12:30 p.m. on both days.
