NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was Senior Day on Saturday at 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium, but first year
Maddie Latta grabbed at least a little of the spotlight for the Yale softball team. Latta tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout as the Bulldogs blanked Cornell 2-0 in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader.
Cornell earned a split of the two games by winning the second game 6-5.
Miranda Papes, one of two Yale seniors, had a big day. Her double in the fourth inning of the second game drove home
Lauren Perren with the Bulldogs' second run of the game.
In the second game, Papes singled home a run in Yale's four-run fifth inning and then belted a long, solo home run to left in the seventh inning as the Bulldogs' big comeback fell just short. In all, Papes was 3-for-6 in the two games with two runs scored and three RBI.
Yale's other senior – team captain
Kortney Ponce – was involved in touching moment in the first inning of the first game. Ponce, who has been out all season with an injury, started the game at her customary shortstop position and was removed after one pitch, receiving a big ovation from the crowd.
Latta baffled the Big Red hitters in the opener. She struck out four in earning her fourth victory of the season.
Back-to-back triples by
Willa Ferrer and
Lauren Perren gave Yale a 1-0 lead in the second.
Carmen Muscolina and
Carolyn Skotz also had hits in the game for the Bulldogs.
Cornell jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game. The margin could have been greater except for a terrific running catch by Yale centerfielder
Alex Perren with two runners on base to end the top of the fourth inning.
That play loomed even larger as the Bulldogs started their comeback with a four-run fifth inning. Skotz's RBI double to left field capped the rally.
Hannah Turner tossed three terrific innings of shutout relief to keep Yale close.
Cornell pitcher Gabrielle Maday, though, retired the next two hitters after Papes' homer in the seventh to earn the victory.
The same two teams meet in a single game on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
