NEW YORK, N.Y. – It was another dramatic Saturday for the Yale softball team.
Carolyn Skotz doubled home two runs in the seventh inning as the Bulldogs rallied to defeat Columbia 11-9 in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Lions came back to win the second game 3-1.
In the opener, Yale had a 7-2 lead after
Alex Perren's sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth.
Columbia, though, scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead.
The Bulldogs were down to their final out in the seventh when
Gretchen Bunovsky stepped to the plate with runners on second and third. Bunovsky worked a walk, bringing Skotz to the plate with the bases loaded. Skotz delivered a clutch double to right field that drove home Perren and
Willa Ferrer. Bunovsky also scored when the ball was misplayed.
Nicole Conway pitched 1.2 innings of relief to earn the victory.
Maddie Latta, who started in the circle, also contributed three hits and scored two runs at the plate.
Sam Goodcase and
Grayson Vives added two hits apiece.
In the second game, Goodcase had two more hits, and Ferrer drove home Yale's run with a double.
Columbia scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings.
The same two teams play a single game on Sunday. The first pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
