BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A career-high 25 points from senior guard
Jenna Clark was not enough for the Yale women's basketball team Friday night at Stabler Arena, as Lehigh broke open a tie game by outscoring Yale 30-15 in the fourth for a 90-75 win.
Until the waning moments of the final quarter, the game was close throughout. A three from junior guard
Christen McCann beat the buzzer at the end of the first and pulled Yale (0-4, 0-0 Ivy League) within 23-20. McCann went on to score nine points.
Layups from McCann, junior guard
Nyla McGill and Clark gave Yale a lead, 26-23, early in the second. But the Bulldogs hit a dry spell, missing six straight shots, so by the time Clark drove in for another layup with 3:44 Lehigh had retaken the lead, 30-26. The Bulldogs would tie the game 31-31 on a free throw by senior forward
Brenna McDonald, but Lehigh ended the quarter with a 10-5 run to take a 41-36 lead into halftime.
Yale shined in the third quarter, as a reverse layup by McGill gave the Bulldogs a 50-49 lead with 5:30 left. That lead grew to as many as nine, and the Bulldogs outscored the Mountain Hawks 24-19 in that frame.
The fourth quarter belonged to Lehigh (4-0, 0-0 Patriot League), however. The Mountain Hawks opened up a 70-62 lead with 4:49 to play on a three-pointer by guard Ella Stemmer (19 points), prompting a Bulldog timeout. A pair of free throws by sophomore guard
Kiley Capstraw eventually trimmed the lead to 74-69 with 2:42 to play, but another three-pointer by Stemmer propelled Lehigh on a 9-2 run that put the game out of reach. The Mountain Hawks shot 50 percent for the game.
