Offense Erupts as No. 17 Yale Shuts Out Colgate 7-0

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Yale field hockey team enjoyed its second-biggest offensive day of the year and wrapped up its weekend trip to upstate New York with a 7-0 win at Colgate Sunday afternoon at Tyler's Field. The Bulldogs' seven goals were their most since scoring eight in an 8-2 win vs. LIU in the season opener.
 
Yale improves to 6-1 overall (1-1 Ivy League), while Colgate falls to 3-6 (0-2 Patriot League). 
 
Summary
  • Yale took a 1-0 lead at 4:36, as senior forward Poppy Beales tipped in a shot by sophomore forward/back/midfielder Ymre Massée.
  • Less than three minutes later the Bulldogs scored again, as sophomore midfielder Victoria Collee took a pass from senior forward/midfielder Lauren Venter and fired a shot past Colgate goalie Claire van Kempen at 7:09.
  • Yale's third goal came on a penalty corner in the final minute. After inserting, Massée took a pass from Beales, got van Kempen down and sent in a goal at 14:02.
  • Collee scored her second goal of the game on a backhand shot at 36:39 in the third.
  • Colgate got its first shot on a corner at 41:36. Junior Hettie Whittington got her stick up high at the goal line to keep the shot out, earning a defensive save. 
  • Yale upped its lead to 5-0 on a goal by junior midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey, who slammed home a cross from junior forward/back/midfielder Tabs Collier.
  • After a Colgate player fell on the ball just in front of the goal with 6:39 left, Whittington scored on a penalty stroke to make it 6-0.
  • Yale capped the scoring at 58:23, with Collee scoring.

  • In the first half Yale outshot Colgate 16-0 and had an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Yale finished with a 30-4 shot advantage, and a 19-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • First-year goalkeeper Maddie Shepherd earned her first career start, finishing with three saves.
  • Venter's assist on Yale's second goal was her first assist of the season.
  • This was Yale's largest margin of victory since an 8-1 win vs. Merrimack on Nov. 3, 2019.
  • This marked Yale's first shutout since a 3-0 win vs. then-No. 19 Temple on Oct. 27, 2024. 
  • Yale is 5-0 against Colgate since 2009, with four of the wins coming by shutout.
