NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale women's and coed sailing teams faced cold, windy and even snowy conditions on the water as they competed around the East Coast.
The women's team placed third in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship, hosted at St. Mary's College of Maryland. On Saturday, the breeze was strong from the north/northeast, with puffs reaching into the high 20s, accompanied by some rain. On Sunday, the wind held in a similar direction and ranged from 8-12 knots, with puffs into the high teens. Racing was tight among the top boats, and the Bulldogs were only nine points away from first and two points away from second place. Skipper Dorothy Mendelblatt, with crew Genevieve Schmidt, dominated and won A Division by 19 points. Skipper Carly Kieding, with crews Maren Bradley and Annabel Woodworth, placed fourth in B Division.
The coed team headed to Dartmouth for the 35th Captain Hurst Bowl. Saturday brought breezy and cold conditions, along with some snowfall. The puffs reached as high as the mid-40s, and the wind was consistently strong from the northeast, ranging from 14-25 knots. On Sunday, the wind completely shut off, so no racing was completed. Skipper Wyatt Kelly and crew Ashley Highland won A Division, and skipper Thomas O'Grady, with crews Ryan Tonkovich and Margaret Ratzan, placed 10th in B Division. The team placed fourth overall.
Another coed squad raced over the weekend at Kings Point in the Nevins Trophy. Saturday similarly brought frigid and windy racing conditions from the north. On Sunday, the wind was lighter and decreased as the day went on, starting at 7-12 knots in the morning and dropping to 4-6 knots by the afternoon. Skipper Mathias Reimer, with crew Puiyee Kong, placed second in A Division; skipper Eli Shainker, with crews Tom Commander and Matilda Twigg, placed 15th in B Division. The team placed 10th overall.
At the Dave Perry Trophy, hosted at Yale, four boats represented the Bulldogs on the water. The regatta took place on Sunday, and Brown, Coast Guard and Yale each had multiple boats representing their teams. Skipper Patrick Wahlig and crew Katie May placed the highest among the Yale boats, finishing in seventh place.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will compete in the Open Atlantic Coast Championships at Brown, the Yale Women's Regatta at YCYC and the Coast Guard Invite.
