No. 10 Princeton Scores Twice in Second Half to Edge Yale 2-1

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 10 Princeton overcame an early deficit to top the Yale field hockey team 2-1 Friday night at Bedford Field. The Tigers scored twice in the final 16:02 for the win.

Yale falls to 5-2 overall (1-2 Ivy League), while Princeton improves to 5-4 (2-1 Ivy League).

Summary
  • Yale took a 1-0 lead 2:45 into the game. After a long pass set up a shot by first-year forward Maddie Leathem that was saved by Princeton goalkeeper Olivia Caponiti, first-year back Emilia Puddicombe got the rebound and backhanded it past a Princeton defender with Caponiti out of position.
  • Princeton got a pair of corners in the final 10 seconds of the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf went down for a save on the first corner, and the Bulldogs blocked a shot on the next one.
  • A great tackle by junior midfielder Kaitlyn Chang in the open field kept the lead intact in the third quarter. She denied Princeton a chance to score in transition after a stop on a Yale corner with eight minutes left in that quarter.
  • Princeton hit the post with a shot with less than five minutes left in the third.
  • After a save by Schwarzkopf on a point-blank shot by Molly Nye, the Tigers got a corner with 1:12 left in the third. Ottilie Sykes gathered in a loose ball right in front of the cage and slid the game-tying goal in at the 43:58 mark.
  • Schwarzkopf made a diving stick save on a Princeton penalty stroke with 9:53 left. She made another diving save on a Princeton corner 30 seconds later.
  • Princeton went ahead on a goal by Saylor Milone at 55:29. She was all alone behind the Yale defense after getting a pass from Anna Faulstich.
  • Yale pulled Schwarzkopf for an extra field player with less than three minutes left. A green card on Princeton with 1:11 to play added to the Bulldogs' advantage, but they were unable to get a shot off.
  • Princeton intercepted a Yale pass in the final seconds to seal the win.
