Big First Half Pushes Yale Past Northeastern, 2-0

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Paced by goals from Abigail Solomon and JoJo DeNegri, the Yale women's soccer team opened its first of two road games this week in style, scoring twice in the first half en route to a 2-0 victory over Northeastern at Parsons Field on Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs' two scores marked the first time Northeastern has allowed a goal this season. Additionally, entering the matchup, the Huskies' goalkeeper was one of just three in the nation with four clean sheets and had carried a 485-minute shutout streak dating back to last season.

With the victory, Yale improved to 2-1-0, and Northeastern dropped to 2-1-2.

"Obviously always happy to get a result, especially on the road, said Sarah Martinez, the Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We challenged our group to score early and score often when we have momentum and they responded well to that tonight. Northeastern is a confident and organized team so I was especially happy with our composure throughout the game."

"We managed the second half well and were able to control the tempo a bit by knocking the ball around which is good for us to see different looks," added Martinez.

Scoring Summary
  • 7' | The Bulldogs struck first after Thorvaldsdottir gained possession on the left side and delivered a cross into the box, where Solomon converted the opportunity with a shot that bounced past the Northeastern goalkeeper. 1-0 YALE
  • 14' | Following a corner kick from Alex Chang that was punched away by the Northeastern goalkeeper, the ball found DeNegri through traffic, and she fired it home to double the Bulldogs' lead. 2-0 YALE
