Bulldogs Fall at No. 5 SMU

Ava Poinsett had 10 kills to lead Yale

DALLAS, Texas – The Bulldogs played their second match in as many days against a ranked opponent and lost at No. 5 SMU on Saturday afternoon.  The scores of the match were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21.

Set 1 (25-14, SMU)
  • Betsy Goodenow and Ava Poinsett had early kills as the teams traded points early.
  • The Mustangs used a 13-1 run to take control of the set.
  • Poinsett had a team-best three kills in the opening frame while Kalyssa Taggart dished out six assists on Yale's eight kills.
Set 2 (25-18, SMU)
  • Skylar Jackson tied the set at 4-4 with a kill and finished the set with three kills.
  • SMU scored seven of the next eight points after the Jackson kill.
  • Poinsett had three kills, a dig and a solo block – one of three blocks for the team in set two – in a frame that had four ties and two lead changes.
Set 3 (25-21, SMU)
  • Yale stayed with SMU until the end of the set – Poinsett's kill pulled Yale within three at 23-20.
  • Despite losing the set, the Bulldogs had more kills (14-13) and blocks (2-1) than the Mustangs.
  • Poinsett and Jackson both had four kills in the frame, while Betsy Goodenow had three.

  • All Yale Texas natives contributed today:  Skylar Jackson (8 kills), Bethanie Wu (10 assists), Naya Salfiti (one block assist), Caroline Huseman (4 attacks) and Callie Funk (one block assist).
  • In two matches against top-15 opponents this weekend, the Bulldogs held a 16-14 edge in blocks. 
  • Jackson in her return to Texas led the Bulldogs with a 2.83 kills per set average in the two matches this weekend.
  • Poinsett led the Bulldogs with 10 kills in today's match.
