HANOVER, N.H. – Meg Johnson continued her hot
hitting, but it wasn't enough to lead the Yale softball team
to victory. Johnson homered for the second straight day and
extended her hitting streak to four games, but Yale lost a
doubleheader to Dartmouth at Sachem Field. The Bulldogs dropped the
first game 7-3, despite a solo home run from Christy Nelson, and
fell 11-3 in the second game.
In the four-game series with the Big Green, Johnson batted .667
(8-for-12) with three doubles, two home runs and five RBI.
In the first game, Yale outhit the Big Green 8-6 but left six
runners on base. Dartmouth also took advantage of nine walks from
the Bulldogs' pitchers. Johnson and Allie Canulli had two
hits apiece for Yale.
The Bulldogs trailed 4-1 after two innings but pulled to within
one by scoring single runs in the third and fourth. In the third,
Ashley Sloan led off with a single, stole second and scored on
Johnson's double. Nelson then led off the fourth with her
fourth homer of the season.
Dartmouth, though, put the game away by scoring three times in
the sixth.
Yale scored its first run in the second. With two outs, Lexi
Peacock singled through the left side. Holly Gutterud followed with
an RBI double down the right field line. At the time, it tied the
score at 1-1, but the Big Green scored three times in the bottom of
the second.
In the second game, Johnson homered in the first to give the
Bulldogs the early lead, but Dartmouth erupted for eight runs in
the second inning.
Sloan's two-run single in the fifth cut it to 8-3, but
Hillary Hubert ended the game with a three-run homer in the bottom
of the fifth. Hubert had three hits and knocked in four runs in the
game.
Mariclaire Rebman also had a hit for the Bulldogs (9-22, 4-8
Ivy).
The Big Green (11-20 overall) improved to 9-3 in the Ivy North
Division with the two wins.
Yale was scheduled to play a doubleheader at Wagner on Wednesday
but it has been cancelled. The Bulldogs will now next be in action
this weekend when they host a four-game series with Harvard. The
action begins at 12:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday
is Alumni Day at Dewitt Family Field.
