Skinner, Brennan Have Three Hits On Day For Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Columbia used a pair of late rallies to sweep an Easter Sunday Ivy League doubleheader from Yale at Dewitt Family Field. The Lions scored three runs in the fifth inning and tacked on a run in the sixth en route to a 4-0 victory in the first game and tallied five times in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh in an 8-4 win in the second game.

Hannah Brennan and Allison Skinner both had three hits on the day for the Bulldogs. Freshman Maddie Wuelfing made her first career start at shortstop in the second game and went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The first game was a pitcher's duel between Columbia's Tonia Wu and Francesca Casalino. It was scoreless through four innings as Casalino didn't allow a hit until Madison Gott singled leading off the fourth.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, had a couple of early scoring chances against Wu but couldn't capitalize. In the second, Sarah Onorato singled leading off but was erased on a fielder's choice. Still, Yale had two runners on base after Lauren Delgadillo was hit by a pitch with one out, but Wu retired the next two hitters.

The Lions (8-16, 5-3 Ivy) finally broke through in the fifth with the help of three Yale errors, which led to three unearned runs for Columbia. Mackensy Lakian's sacrifice fly scored Wu in the sixth inning to cap the scoring.

Casalino pitched well for the Bulldogs. She struck out eight and yielded only one earned run over seven innings.

Yale (5-12, 2-14 Ivy) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Skinner started the rally with a single, and Camille Weisenbach followed with a triple to right field. It was Weisenbach's team-leading 13th RBI of the season. Brennan drove home the second run with a sacrifice fly.

Taylor Troutt's RBI bunt single in the second cut the lead to 2-1, and the Lions used two more successful squeeze bunts as part of their five-run sixth inning. Columbia also got a two-run triple from Lakian and an RBI single from Alix Cook in the inning.

The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brennan doubled to left field and scored on Laina Do's single. Allie Souza followed with a single, and Wuelfing drove home Do with a single to right field.

Columbia, though, added two more insurance runs in the seventh.

Casalino again started in the circle for the Bulldogs and was victimized by several of the Lions' well-placed bunt hits.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they play a doubleheader at Hartford beginning at 3 p.m.
