Bulldogs Blank Bears In Opener; Fall In Second Game

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's seniors were honored prior to Saturday's first game against Brown. They then went out and led the Bulldogs to an impressive 5-0 victory over the Bears on crystal clear afternoon at 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium. Francesca Casalino tossed a four-hit shutout, Allison Skinner scored a run and knocked in another and Sydney Ginsberg had a clutch, two-run single in the win.

Brown came back to win the second game 2-1.

The first game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Bulldogs erupted for four runs. After Carlin Hagmaier singled and Casalino walked, Skinner followed with an RBI single to right field. Olivia Lee's single loaded the bases, and Lindsay Kuss worked a walk to force home the second run. Ginsberg then singled to left, scoring Lee and Skinner to make it 4-0.

Yale tacked on another run in the sixth. Casalino walked and moved to second on Skinner's sacrifice bunt. Kuss then scored pinch runner Giovy Webb with a long double to left field.

That was more than enough for Casalino, who was dominant. She struck out three, allowed only one walk and retired the final six batters she faced in earning her third win of the season.

Casalino, Ginsberg and Skinner were joined in the pre-game celebration by fellow senior and student assistant coach Maddie Wuelfing.

All the scoring in the second game came in the first inning. Brown scored a pair of unearned runs to grab the lead in the top of the frame.

The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the first on Hagmaier's RBI single.

Yale had runners on base in the five of the next six innings but couldn't capitalize.

Shelby Kennedy's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh put the tying run on base, but she was left stranded.

Both teams had seven hits in the game.

Sydney Grobman and Lee each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Terra Jerpbak was the hard-luck losing pitcher. She did not allow an earned run and struck out two.

The same two teams play a single game on Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
