Butcher Part of Four Goals in 5-0 Win Over St. Francis

Rappole, Winkler have three-point nights

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – First-year Alanna Butcher had a goal and three assists, classmate Ellie Rappole had two goals and junior Ellery Winkler enjoyed a multiple-point game as the Yale women's soccer team posted a 5-0 win over St. Francis College at Reese Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs posted a season high in goals and posted their third shutout of the year.

"I'm really happy for our group to be rewarded for the many great things we've done lately on the ball," said Sarah Martinez, Yale's Loring Family Head Coach. "To keep a shutout and score five quality goals feels like a bit of relief for us all. The growth we've had this season has been tremendous and I'm excited to gain a little momentum heading into our final conference game against the Ivy League champs (Brown)."

The scoring got started when Butcher caught up with a through ball along the left side and came in to the 18-yard box before sending a crossing pass toward her teammate for the game's first score. The St. Francis goalie dove to get a few fingers on the pass, but it was not enough to prevent Rappole from getting to it first with an open side of the net to deposit the ball for her third goal of the season.

On the second tally, Butcher, who recovered her own blocked pass, fed Winkler 10 feet from the goal with a shorter crossing pass inside the six-yard box. Winkler used a chest-bump, first-touch to settle the ball to her feet and then spun to her left and flicked a shot to the back of the net for her third of the year and a 2-0 lead.

That lead grew to three early in the second half when Rappole dribbled into the 18 on the right side and found Butcher open in the middle for a shot from 15 yards out. It was also her third tally this fall.

Emily Yin added the exclamation point to the victory with a late score from 20 yards out.

The Bulldogs, who got a combined two saves from Maya Bellomo and Marisa Shorrock, finish the 2021 season by hosting Ivy champion Brown on Senior Day at Reese Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.
