NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale softball team has one more weekend before the start of Ivy League play. And it's a weekend that will provide quite a challenge. The Bulldogs are in Tucson, Ariz., for the Bear Down Fiesta, hosted by the University of Arizona. Yale plays Marist and Arizona on Friday, UNLV and Marist on Saturday and UNLV again on Sunday. Video is available for all five games.

The Bulldogs kicked off the 2022 season last weekend at the San Diego Classic. The highlight of the tournament was a Saturday sweep of Stony Brook and San Diego State. Grayson Vives went 2-for-2 and knocked in three runs to lead the way in a 5-4 win over the Seawolves. Later that day, Carmen Muscolina and Katie Donahey belted their first career home runs in a 7-3 win over San Diego State.

Yale received excellent pitching in both games. Maddie Latta struck out five in the win over Stony Brook, and Nicole Conway scattered eight hits and struck out four against San Diego State.

The trip to Arizona is a homecoming for Donahey and Conway. Donahey of Phoenix was a four-year varsity starter at Xavier College Preparatory School and batted .382 with a 1.039 OPS in 2019. Conway is from Tucson and is Catalina Foothills High School's all-time leader in strikeouts (924), ERA (2.23) and wins (58).

The Bulldogs will be facing very talented opponents. Marist has a 7-8 overall record, including splitting two games with Harvard. The Red Foxes beat the Crimson 11-1 but then fell in the second matchup 4-1.

Arizona (15-4) is ranked No. 9 nationally. Three of the Wildcats' four losses have come to ranked opponents, including No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Alabama.

UNLV has a 15-4 overall record, including a victory over BYU.

Yale opens Ivy League play with a three-game home series vs. Harvard on Mar. 19-20.
