It was a memorable opening day for first year
Maddie Latta. She belted her first career home run on the first day of the 2022 Yale softball season. It came in the Bulldogs' second game of the day against UC San Diego.
Â
Yale faced a challenging assignment in its first games since 2020. The opponents, BYU and UC San Diego, had already played a combined 29 games this spring. The Bulldogs were in both games early before BYU and San Diego used big innings late to pull away.
Â
Latta's blast to left field in the fourth inning pulled Yale within 2-1 in the second game. UC San Diego, though, scored three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to win 9-1.
Â
In the opener, BYU scored six times in the fourth inning to break open a close game en route to an 8-0 victory.
Â
SJ Mull had her first career hit for the Bulldogs.
Â
Yale moves to San Diego State for the next two games of the Classic. The Bulldogs meet Stony Brook at 1 p.m. EST and then play San Diego State at 6 p.m. EST.
