Two Goals in Fourth Lift No. 18 Yale Past Brown, 3-1, in Ivy Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 18 Yale field hockey team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to open Ivy League play with a 3-1 win over Brown on a sunny afternoon Saturday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bulldogs outshot the Bears 17-6, including 11-0 in the second half.

Yale improves to 5-0 overall (1-0 in the Ivy League), while Brown falls to 1-3 (0-1 in the Ivy League). The last Yale team to start a season 5-0 was the 1995 squad, which went 7-0 to start the season and finished 13-6, setting the school record for wins.

Summary
  • Yale outshot Brown 4-1 in the first quarter, but both of Yale's shots on goal were stopped by Brown first-year goalkeeper Ellie Parker and the game was scoreless heading into the second.
  • Brown went ahead 57 seconds into the second quarter on a penalty corner goal by Lexi Pellegrino.
  • Parker kept Brown's lead intact by denying junior forward/back/midfielder Tabs Collier on a breakaway after a Bears turnover with just under five minutes left in the second quarter.
  • Yale tied the game on a penalty corner 57 seconds into the third quarter. Sophomore forward/back/midfielder Ymre Massée inserted to junior back/midfielder Hettie Whittington, who sent the ball towards the far post for a deflection by senior forward/midfielder Lauren Venter.
  • Venter almost made it 2-1 Yale with 9:30 left in the third, but her shot hit the left post and bounced away. The game remained tied 1-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead on a penalty corner goal with 10:35 left. Massée inserted to senior back Maddy Zavalick, who set up Whittington for a shot that senior forward Poppy Beales tipped past a prone Parker.
  • Venter drew a penalty stroke with 6:50 left, but Bears goalkeeper Kylee Delmonte – who came on specifically for the stroke – made a diving stop on Whittington to keep the Bulldogs' lead at 2-1.
  • Brown pulled its goalie for a kicking back with 4:40 left in the game. Just 24 seconds later, sophomore midfielder Victoria Collee scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Chang to put the game out of reach.
