Win Streak Snapped at Five; Cornell Tops No. 17 Yale 2-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – In a clash of unbeaten teams in the first game at Cornell's new Marsha Dodson Field, the No. 17 Yale field hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season Friday afternoon. The Big Red held Yale to a season-low 11 shots, and four shots on goal, in beating the Bulldogs 2-0.

Yale falls to 5-1 overall (1-1 in the Ivy League), while Cornell improves to 5-0 (2-0 in the Ivy League).

Summary
  • Yale outshot Cornell 3-2 in the scoreless first quarter.
  • Cornell went ahead 1:43 into the second quarter on a penalty corner goal that was deflected in by Blake Wilks. That marked just the second time all season Yale had given up the game's first goal.
  • Facing a string of shots on penalty corners midway through the second quarter, the Bulldogs blocked three shots and got a save from first-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf to remain within striking distance.
  • At 2:13 of the third quarter Cornell went ahead 2-0 on a goal by Uma Käding, who tipped in a pass from Rease Coleman. That was Käding's fifth goal of the season, tying for the team lead.
  • A yellow card with 7:07 left sidelined sophomore forward/midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco for five minutes.
  • Cornell blocked a Yale shot on a penalty corner with five minutes left to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
  • Yale had another series of corners with 2:30 left, but the Bulldogs' lone shot went wide.

Notes
  • Yale limited Cornell to a season-low 14 shots and six shots on goal.
  • Schwarzkopf finished with four saves, as did Cornell's Jane McNally.
  • The game pitted first-year midfielder/forward Emma Mueller against her sister, Cornell's Vivienne Mueller, and junior midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey against her cousin, Cornell's Julia Ramsey.
  • Prior to this season the last Yale team to start a season 5-0 was the 1995 squad. That team went 7-0 to start the season and finished 13-6, setting the school record for wins.
