NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale sailing teams had a packed weekend of sailing, competing in three fleet race regattas and one match race.
The women's team returned to Dartmouth this weekend for the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1A. On Saturday, the breeze was shifty from the northwest, ranging from 5-12 knots. On Sunday, the wind came from the south and ranged from 6-14 knots. Skipper Dorothy Mendelblatt, with crews Genevieve Schmidt and Maren Bradley, placed second in A division. Skipper Audrey Foley, with crews Ashley Highland, Genevieve Schmidt, and Maren Bradley, placed fifth in B division. Each division completed 14 races, and Yale finished third overall.
The match racing team headed to Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead for the NEISA Match Race Championship. After the eight-team round robin, Yale finished with a 4-3 record, positioning them in third before the next stages of racing. Yale then won their quarterfinal and semifinal races before falling to Brown in the final, placing the Bulldogs second overall. Skipper Morgan Pinckney raced with crews Carly Kieding, Mathias Reimer, and Wyatt Kelly in a Sonar class keelboat.
The coed team competed at the Danmark Trophy, hosted by the Coast Guard Academy. On Saturday, the breeze was shifty and puffy, starting at 5-12 knots from the northeast and dying down as racing went on. Sunday was similarly a tricky day of unpredictable shifts and puffs out on the Thames River. The breeze came from the east-northeast in the morning, running from 5-10 knots, but died down and shifted to the east by the end of racing. After sailing 11 races in each division, the Bulldogs finished 17th.
Another coed squad raced in the Jesuit Invite, hosted by Fordham. Skippers Patrick Wahlig with crew Puiyee Kong placed 10th in A division; skippers Clara Díaz Suárez and Walter Cox placed seventh in B division with crews Beatrice Formenton and Katie May.
Next week, the Bulldogs will race in the Open ACC Round 1A at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Stu Nelson at Connecticut College, and the Sister Esther Trophy at Roger Williams.
