NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale men's soccer team prepares to open the 2024 season with a pair of games over the Labor Day weekend. The Bulldogs host Marquette on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. at Reese Stadium before traveling to Indiana on Sunday evening to face off with the Hoosiers at 8 p.m.

The Bulldogs are the reigning Ivy League Tournament champions after taking home the inaugural crown last season by defeating Brown 2-1 in the finals. The Elis went on to defeat Bryant 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the program's first national postseason win since 1999. Ultimately, the Bulldogs fell to Hofstra in the second round. The 2023 Yale squad recorded an overall record of 11-6-3. The 11 team victories were the second-most in a single season over the past 25 years. This year, the Bulldogs were picked to finish second in the Ivy League Preseason Poll behind Penn.

Moving Forward
The Elis graduated several key pieces from last season's team. Eric Lagos and Max Rogers were the team's top goal scorers. Captain Jake Schaffer was a primary back line defender. But they will also return an experienced roster including 10 players who appeared in at least 10 games.

Newly elected captain TJ Presthus returns as a force in the back line for the Bulldogs. The reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year has started every game since he walked on campus. The senior was chosen as a pre-season All-American by Top Drawer Soccer and ranked 22nd on the publication's list of top players in the country. Goalkeeper Chris Edwards is back between the posts after a fantastic season in which he recorded eight shutouts and was named as a second team All-Ivy League selection. Jonathan Seidman and Jamie Orson return as experienced defenders, and Diego Zaffanella and Quanah Brayboy will once again facilitate as high-level midfielders. Offensively, Joseph Farouz and Alex Umana look to contribute scoring opportunities as both finished with a pair of goals last season.

Welcome to Yale
The Bulldogs will welcome six first years to the roster: Sven Meacham, Vaughan Osga, Jorik Dammann, Owen Bull, Teague McCammon and Salif Leintu. Juniors Marco Borrego and Lior Gurrion also made the Yale roster.

Last Time Out
Yale has faced both Marquette and Indiana before. The Bulldogs defeated Marquette 3-2 in 2022 and upended the Hoosiers 2-1 in 1999, the last time the two teams met.

Scouting Marquette
The Golden Eagles have started the season with a pair of wins after defeating Drexel 2-0 and Marist 6-1. Marquette is led by junior Mitchell Dryden who has already scored three goals so far this season. As a result of their hot start, the Golden Eagles are receiving votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll.

Scouting Indiana
The Hoosiers are coming off an appearance in the 2023 NCAA Quarterfinals, but have started the season 0-1 after a 2-0 loss to Saint Louis in the team's opener. Despite the defeat, Indiana is a formidable team with five players ranked in Top Drawer Soccer's top-100 players. The Hoosiers were picked as the unanimous preseason favorite to win the Big 10.
